In an era where the beauty of a marriage is measured by its extravagance, the costs of traditional marriages have risen far too much to be a viable economical choice. According to (Chaaban, 2013)“Religious marriages in Lebanon cost at least Nine Million Dollars per year” with a minimum average cost of $230 per religious marriage, without accounting for the gala dinner that follows. In comparison, civil marriage costs $1.5 Million per year averaging at around $1250 per marriage including travel expenses to and from the country granting the marriage. The revenue gained by the religious institutions from marriage contracts alone is around 9 million dollars, as explained before, this number adds up to 15 million dollars, once we account for the revenue from the average minimum divorce fees. Succinctly, clerics are making a minimum of 15 million dollars from marriages in Lebanon when the mandatory fees of divorce that happens to 20% of the total number of marriages that occur within a year. On the other hand, civil marriage allows the bride and groom to save about $1,400 dollars over the price of a regular wedding.
