Singing In Schools Essay

In a perfect world, all school activities should be funded, but the reality is that public schools are not given much money. There is an increasing pressure on schools to pick the activities the most beneficial to fund because there is just not enough money to fund every single activity, however, usually it is the most popular ones that are chosen such as sports. The first activity they usually cut out is the arts. In some schools, football is valued more than the arts, but the arts such as chorus have much more benefits than a sport known for concussions that are known to cause brain damage. Chorus is a very popular form of participation in the arts. According to Chorus America, there are an estimated 42.6 million people in the U.S. who sing in more than 270,000 choruses today which is more than any other performing art, so clearly a great number of people enjoy chorus. Additionally, both parents and educators (from every discipline) attribute a significant part of a child's academic success to singing in a choir” and, “ 64% of parents whose children are currently singing in choruses say their child’s ability or performance in English/language arts improved since joining a chorus, 57% say their child’s ability or performance in math improved, 61% say their child’s academic performance overall improved after he or she became a member of a choir.” These statistics demonstrate how chorus positively affects a person’s academic abilities.
