The Benefits Of Choice In Education

Who doesn 't want the freedom of choice? Choice is a privilege often overlooked by many public schools and this can have some crippling effects. When students are presented with the opportunity of choice in school, they often perform better and more efficiently. If students can choose to participate in the classes that they enjoy and feel that they will benefit most from, they focus more on their work and are more interested in what they are doing. This leads to students being happier and more successful because they are doing something they enjoy. People often say that your career should be something that you love. If students are given the opportunity of choice, they can work hard at the careers they actually want to do. Schools should be more personalized to their students and students should have more of a choice in their education. However, these choices should be guided by wise teachers or adults in order to lead the students in the right direction for a happy and successful future outside of school. Angela describes grit as the determination within ones self in order to complete a task or reach a goal. Duckworth states that “I came to the conclusion that what we need in education is a much better understanding of students and learning from a motivational perspective”. This self motivation is apparent when students are able to choose their education path. Students will be able to learn subjects that they are actually interested in and are internally motivated to educate themselves more and to succeed in that class.
