Children In New York Classroom: Neighborhood Analysis

I have gone in depth in studying my neighborhood from the beginning of the Children in New York Class and I can definitely say that I have learn a lot about my neighborhood that I didn’t have no knowledge about. The fact that Brownsville is known as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Brooklyn and I have been living here for so many years and wasn’t aware of that. My perspective sure did change, due to the fact that there is such a high percentage of 23.4% of people living under the poverty line which is almost the same as the while New York city at 24%. This is very sad to know that’s you are living in a neighborhood that is basically suffering yet the government or a politician does anything to fix these issues. These issues occur so often yet nothing is being done it seemed to be a continuing cycle. “African American students also reported that push factors relating to suspensions, expulsions, and not getting along with students or teachers often led to drop out.” These actions can be often avoided is we do spend the time in giving children the voice needed, is not always about teachers being Arthurian and thinking children don’t have the right to speak up for themselves. We see it in the media of videos of African American men and teen in schools that are being mistreated by the teacher, school safety offices etc. School should be a place to be comfortable to express you of ideas and ask questions of what is being taught and be able to connect it with real life experiences and not all children are given the same experience and there should never be an achievement between race and …show more content…
I believe that all schools and children should receive and be granted the same opportunity to all education whether they are privileged or not. Research has shown that low income schools have not been given the fair share of state and local funding. When these children are being denied of the tools that they need in order to become successful it will have a negative impact on not only on their future but also their neighborhoods and family as well. The U.S Department of Education wrote an article stating that “Educators across the country understand that low-income students need extra support and resources to succeed, but in far too many places policies for assigning teachers and allocating resources are perpetuating the problem rather than solving it” (November, 2011) Most Educators who are passionate about enlightening students so that can further explore a brighter path, have come to the conclusion that these students in low income communities will never be on the same level as other children who are from middle or upper class families because the support that they need to achieve those standards are not being delivered to them during these important years within their lives.
