Kids can be quite the handful, but as shown in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter, a fictional story about a Puritan society. In this novel Hawthorne shows the great importance of children and their significant impact on adults. Throughout the novel Pearl has made an enormous impact on Hester, by showing her who she really is. In the beginning of the book Hester, the mother of Pearl, is constantly being judged based on one action she took. Ever since she committed adultery and received the letter “A”, her life was never the same. “It had the effect of a spell, taking her out of the ordinary relations with humanity and enclosing her in a sphere by herself.” (52) This quote shows the isolation Hester was feeling without anyone to connect to. But then as the story continues we understand the immense positive impact Pearl has on Hester through the quote, “These outbreaks of a fierce temper had a kind of value, and even comfort, for her mother; because there was at least an intelligible earnestness in the mood” (91). This quote is very important because it shows the bond between Hester and her child, when all was lost she had the “comfort” of Pearl to depend on.
