Young and Not In Love The average fifth-teen year old girl is worried about how many likes her Instagram post gets not who she will be marrying. Millions of young girls across the world in undeveloped countries have to go threw the struggle of child marriage. Child marriage occurs when someone under the age of eighteen either into by marriage by their parent’s permission. Child marriage is a human rights violation and although even though some of the countries have made laws or act to protect children against this, according to the United Nations Population Fund there is still one in every three girls is married before reaching the age eight-teen and one in nine will be married age fifth-teen. The psychological damage of being young and getting married can result in depression, posttraumatic stress, and they have a hard time making their own decisions. At the young age of fifteen Lamana from Yaounde, Cameroon was forced into a marriage where she would be physically abused and forced to having sex. Lamana feel into a deep depression were she thought the only way out, the only way for to feel happiness again was for her to take her life because she felt that miserable on the inside. Lamana’s story is a perfect example of how being forced into a marriage at a very young age can effect you psychological health. The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) conducted a survey in the states of Bihar and Jharkhand, India in 2004, this survey found that girls who were married before eight-teen were twice as likely to be a victim of domestic violence their husbands than girls who married later (2). The effects of being a victim of domestic violence can lead to mental health disorders like to depression, anxiety and panic attacks.
