I think school-aged child care programs can be beneficial for the children and the parents. I personally experienced a school-age child care program when I was younger. My elementary school had a latch-key program where children could stay after school and wait for their parents to pick them up. We got to play outside, do homework, and often do a cool craft. I think these programs are great because children are able to have specific time to fulfill their school requirements to do homework. Also, they get to enjoy some playtime. I think this is a good option for parents because now there is another resource for them to use. I know that my school’s program was free because I went to a small school. I know that other schools have similar programs that might cost a fee or that have eligibility requirement in order to attend. I think communication is the key whenever children are involved. Parents will normally know their children the best, and they can provide a program with useful information about their child. A helpful parent can help give tips about a child, or let the center know when the child is having a rough day. A parent might be more willing to talk about issues, if there is open communication. I think it is also important for the parent to feel involved in the child’s life while at the center. The parent can receive notes and updates about the child’s day to make them feel involved. Also, there could be a sign-up list for volunteers to help out at the center for certain planned activities. I think it is a good idea to let parents volunteer for any fieldtrips that the children might go on. I think the best way to build a relationship with the parent is to talk to them every day. The conversation doesn’t have to be very long, it could just be a quick overview of what the child did today, and make sure to mention the good things, or funny things that the child did during the
