In this day in age, cheating has unfortunately become the norm. Students feel so pressured into doing well in school that they would rather cheat on an assignment than risk getting a bad grade. Despite making these poor choices, they are not bad students- just made bad decision makers. Ultimately, Casey argues that establishing honor codes and other methods of encouraging academic integrity will ultimately make students more ethical adults.

Therefore, creating an open environment for failure would boost students’ self confidence because it would make them more comfortable with learning as a process. According to Dr. Suzanne Lachmann of Psychology Today, many students have low self-confidence because they fear disapproving authority figures such as parents and teachers. Of course, as humans, it is impossible to be perfect 100% of the time; however, people still have a tendency to strive for perfection, rather than setting goals for their reaching potential. Students and adults both tend to feel stressed because they strive for perfection- not admitting to failure as an option. Ultimately, perfectionism leads to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other mental health issues according to Dr. Gordon Flett of the American Psychological Association. But if the goal is “did you learn something,” then by cheating-regardless of how well you did on the assignment- the answer is obviously a “no.” Basically, if success is measured by improvement rather than by proximity to perfection, students will feel challenged to improve their own standards- rather than feel the need to cheat in order to make a certain grade.
