A character in a book is a representation of a human, a real human, a human with emotions. Whilst reading a book, one should feel how the characters are feeling as though they were a fellow human. An invaluable tool used by author to do this is sympathy. An author uses sympathy to get the reader to feel the emotions of the character, to understand the emotions. In stories filled with tough topics, such as it is in John Grisham’s Calico Joe, it is important to try to get the reader to feel sympathy because otherwise, the reader may feel detached from and uninterested in a story.…

It is easy to think of a suspect charged with a crime as threatening if one does not know anything about the circumstances or reasoning behind the actions of the individual. Opinions are not enduring, they change overtime as one learns more about who or what they are identifying. Ponyboy Curtis, a character in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, has many opinions of both his friends and foes. As the book progresses, Pony’s opinion of his friend Dally, his brother Darry, and his enemy Bob all completely change when he understands other people’s perspectives which ultimately mature his own. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle writes a distinct but captivating tale of wit and cunning through his short story “The Adventure of the Final Problem.” The last escapade of the renowned detective is filled with suspense and drama as the contest between Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty ends with the demise of both the champion of the law and the most dangerous criminal of their generation. Within this adventure, Doyle not only manages to provide a unique perspective by telling the story through the eyes of Sherlock Holmes closest companion, but also manages to immerse the reader within his tale through the use of thick tones and blanketing imagery. “The Adventure of the Final Problem” is narrated by Dr. Watson, a peripheral character, and not by the main character, as one might expect. By using a peripheral character, Dr. Watson, as the narrator, the story is told in a more objective manner.…
