Motivation In High School

Improved Essays
We have all had the feeling, the feeling of wanting out and being completely unmotivated and done. Some people have had this feeling when they were teenagers. They were just ready to get out of their parents and live by their own rules. Some have had the feeling with a job and they just become so bored with it that they want to leave. Others, like me, and possibly you reading this, had it during high school. Everyone always talked about getting infected with the horrible “senioritis” disease. Well I got infected early with the “junioritis”. I was tired of the people I was forced to be around day to day, I didn’t care about any of my classes, and the dark, gloomy, plain repeating sight of the halls inside Canyon High School were exhausting to look at. I was done. It was about three weeks into my junior year when I …show more content…
Being a part of the varsity and competition cheerleading team helped me to stay motivated with my school work and kept my determination for wanting to be a good example for others up. Though, this motivation ended quite rapidly. The day I decided that I could no longer handle it, I had an instant need to leave and move on in life. I no longer had those studious qualities. I started showing up late, not completing assignments, and sleeping or watching Netflix during class. I then decided to schedule to speak to my counselor as soon as she was able to see me. Together we came up with a graduation plan for me. We figured out the course credits I needed to complete and I instantly felt the nerves coming because it was finally going to happen. Although I still had a year left of school, the feeling of having six months less than everyone else in my class, made my heart race and my body fill with excitement! It was time to kick things in gear and get out! Now fast forward to the very end of that next

High school athletics have impacted every aspect of my life, including my overall perception of myself. Personally, my entire high school career has been dedicated to cheerleading. Participating in this sport all four years of high school has provided me with opportunities to meet new people and improved leadership skills. I have learned the value of team building, dedication, responsibility, and determination. The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

The Shot I Didn’t Take “You can’t give up before even trying,” said my dad very often. My dad, Matt Matuska, is a firm believer on not giving up. My decision on not going out for basketball was somewhat hard on him because he really enjoyed watching me play. He also didn’t want to see me give up on something that I was “good at”. I didn’t think that I was good at basketball, and to be completely honest, I didn’t enjoy playing the game either.…

I was born in Germany with a German mother and an American father. The benefit of being born into a German family and living in Europe for the first ten years of my life was the greatest privilege I experienced throughout my sixteen years of living. However, my father was in the military at the time causing for a slight pressure to always be prevalent for the duration of my younger years. This mainly revolved around the fact that my sister was able to grow up in Germany and I wanted that same opportunity. Soon after these aspirations were formed, they became mere dreams that never would be fulfilled because my dad was given orders to either move to Mississippi or Oklahoma, which both deemed to be the middle-of-nowhere.…
