Censorship in the United States “When truth is replaced by silence,the silence is a lie,” Yevgeny Yevtushenko wrote. Censorship is a much debated upon subject all around the world, but especially so in the United States. Many argue for and against censorship with relevant and important points. I disagree that censorship should exist in the United States because it goes against the right of free speech, invades an individual 's privacy and oppresses people with different ideas and opinions. Censorship is against the very First Ammendment, one of the most important aspects of the Constitution, the right of free speech. According to News Blaze, “...freedom of expression is directly correlated with freedom of speech, which is granted to us by the provisions of the First Amendment to the Constitution.” (Danz, Jr.). Someone’s speech cannot be blocked simply because of how they express themselves. American Bar says, “This standard for judging obscenity did not change until 1957 when the U.S. Supreme Court announced that the First Amendment does not permit the government to reduce the adult population to reading "only what is fit for children."... It gave constitutional protection to works unless they were utterly without redeeming social importance.” (Routier). The Supreme Court decided in 1957 that censoring works to protect minors leads to adults having to subject to it too. Works could only be censored or banned if they didn’t have any redeeming qualities.
