According to Liz Kolb at the University of Michigan School of Education, “Close to 70 percent of schools that had cell phone bans in place five years ago are reversing their policies.” As this number rises and rises, it leads many to wonder whether lifting the cell phone ban is the right thing to do. Due to the recent uproar, more and more research is being completed on how phones affect students in the classroom. Many believe that when teachers allow students to use their devices, the student productivity decreases significantly. However, others think that teenagers can use these resources to their advantage and benefit from them in the future. Although cell phones can distract students from school, they can be used to enhance learning and allow freedom in the classroom.

Many parents support cell phones because they want to be able to contact their children at all times, and “They also want to be able to reach them in case of emergency”(Matchan 2). In an era where school safety has become a large issue, parents want to make sure that their kids are safe in problematic situations. Liz Kolb emphasized that teachers should be able to determine the policy in their classroom. Kolb’s policy, “Gives teachers autonomy,” and, “It gives them a little bit of freedom”(Kiema 2). The students are able to voice their opinions to the teacher and they can make the final ruling on their own. When the students feel like they have given their say in a matter, they are more likely to accept the teacher’s decision.
