Career Exploration Reflection

At the beginning of the semester I was somewhat intimated by the amount of course work that was expected of each student in this class. However, as time went on and I started to complete the assignments, it became clear how useful many of them were, particularly the resume and the career exploration paper. Both of these assignments were beneficial in their own way, despite the time and effort that went in to completing them according to the instructions. The resume and subsequent critiques from multiple sources yielded a professional document that is flawless and ready to be disseminated to potential employers after a minor customization to it based upon the job description and requirements. The career exploration assignment has taught me how …show more content…
In fact, I had absolutely no idea where to even begin. I was not certain on how to develop appropriate bullet statements, what skills were marketable for those entering a helping profession or whether to include information from my high school such as the awards I earned, the activities I participated in and my cumulative GPA. However, after the completion of the resume workshop lecture and discussion, I felt comfortable enough to create product that would be seen and critique by multiple sources including my TA, the Center for Career Development staff and one of my …show more content…
Throughout my research I learned that a Military Service Members, Veterans and Their Families-Advanced Social Work certificate is not required to work as a youth program coordinator on a military base, but it is recommended because the additional education will improve my knowledge about the unique culture that this population lives in and how children adapt to it, information pertinent to such an occupation. I also discovered that, while it costs a lot to obtain such a certificate, those in such a position do not earn as much as those in a clinical or professional setting, including hospitals and private practices. However, given that I am doing this solely for the purpose of paying and forward and being a part of an institution that I only wish I could do on the front lines, these figures did not sway my decision to pursue this career post-graduation. I am truly grateful for all that I have learned from this assignment, the resume workshop lecture and all of the other course material presented in this class throughout this semester and I look forward to applying it as I grow and mature into a professional social

Honestly, in the beginning of this class, I had an overwhelming impression about the modules that I needed to complete in 9 weeks span. Additionally, I had a hard time figuring out the logic behind the little assignments. I felt like I am just wasting my time. My time this quarter is very limited between work, school, and personal responsibilities. But then, as the assignments progresses, it started to make sense, that those little assignments were essential.…

It is a pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Mr. José Angel Gutierrez who is applying for transfer admissions to the Army MSW program in Department of Social Work at Fayetteville State University. I have known Mr. Gutierrez since the fall of 2014 when he enrolled in my graduate-level social policy course at the University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Social Work. Since then he has kept me abreast of his progress in our MSW program and his service at Fort Sam Houston’s Brooke Army Medical Center. From the beginning, I have been impressed with Mr. Gutierrez’s intellectual curiosity, ability to quickly understand and analyze situations, and balance graduate school with his Army and other responsibilities, as well as his level…

The Assignment that has had the Most Impact on me so Far In my first semester of going back to college, after having been out for over ten years, I took Business English, taught by, May Daniel. This class was a long-distance learning class and started at 4:30 and ended at 5:50 p.m. Mrs. Daniel, told us about our assignments on the first day and one of them was a portfolio project that would be due on the last days of the semester. This assignment included making a resume, a cover letter, a recommendation letter, a cover sheet and a report giving details about the career we are hoping to achieve after graduations and then we had to make it into a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class.…

During POC #1, I learned through the Focus 2 Career Assessment that I am almost ready to become a nurse. In order for me to become a nurse, I need to become a more social person, either that or fake it! By taking the Focus 2 Carer Assessment, I easily learned a valuable lesson about becoming a nurse, and how I should take my personality into consideration while becoming a nurse. Because I am determined to become a nurse, I am willing to become a more social person; but if I were not willing to become more social, Focus 2 claimed that I would excel quite well in many different types of jobs.…

ACES Career Fair Reflection I was amazed as I walked into the ACES Career Fair. I knew there would be a lot of businesses at this event, but I was not able to quantify just how many until I walked around. Since I grew up on a grain farm, I have been familiar with many of these companies surrounding me, such as John Deere, AgriGold, and Pioneer. However, before the career fair, I still researched what companies would be present on Handshake, and I formulated a plan to speak with AgriGold, DuPont Pioneer, Growmark, and Farm Business Farm Management (FBFM). Once I made this decision, I wrote down the tasks associated each internship position a company offered.…

As a veteran I choose to continue my service to the United States by serving as a Social Worker with the Department of Veterans Affairs. I have been working at one of the local VA Medical Centers for a little over a year. Initially I see my role as a broker; connecting my clients with support services they need with the hopes to grow into an advocate supporting my veterans. Serving as a champion for this population seems to be a no brainer for me; as I believe that foundational piece is critical to their wellbeing. Advocates have the ability to use either a ecological or system theory in the support of homeless veterans as “both perspective emphasize external interactions instead of internal functioning”…

What are your thoughts regarding your ability to work with military families and children as a social worker? I personally would be “fine” maybe even a bit too comfortable working with military families and children as a social worker because I grew up with an alcoholic father and I am starting to see the similarities, which honestly took twenty-five years all because everyone is afraid to face the truth; therefore, things just get swept under the rug and open communication is forbidden in order to protect the toxicity of the household. One quote from Park (2011) that struck me states, ‘‘a common saying in the military is that when one person joins, the whole family serves’’ (p. 66). This unfortunately reigns true with addiction. Alcoholism is a family disease that tears away at the family unit.…
