One of the first topics we covered in class was the W curve. The W curve consists of a predictable pattern in which occurs when a person experiences culture shock. Personally, I thought I went through the W curve quickly. One thing I did not experience as described on the W curve was homesickness. As much as I thought being in a new environment on my own would be uncomforting, I surprised myself and was able to adjust just fine. I didn’t feel the need to go home soon or every weekend which made things a lot easier. My biggest relation to the W curve was feeling if I made the right choice in choosing a college. Also, my mind was going back and forth with what I wanted to do with my life and what my major should be. As I got to know Duluth more …show more content…
A career assessment is a process of assessing your interests, skills, personality traits, and values. By conducting career assessments in these four areas, I would likely to discover which careers best fit me. We did something similar in our seminar called self assessment. Each assessment asked us a variety of questions and basing them off of something such as how well we liked to do something or how well we thought we were at doing it. The assessment ended up showing us our weaknesses and strengths in which we could further look into the careers that would pertain to those …show more content…
The first couple weeks were pretty easy, not a lot of homework, no papers to write or tests to study for. Therefore, I had quiet a bit of free time. It was mainly getting us adjusted to how the next couple years were going to be. It really hit me when I had five tests in one week which was probably at the end of the first month. My impressions have defiantly changed from the first couple weeks to the last couple weeks of the first semester. It’s a lot harder then how the first couple weeks perceived it to be. I now have a test every week or every other week. Papers to write, outside activities to attend, and there are always tests that I could be studying for. I now have a better idea how college will be for the next four

During POC #1, I learned through the Focus 2 Career Assessment that I am almost ready to become a nurse. In order for me to become a nurse, I need to become a more social person, either that or fake it! By taking the Focus 2 Carer Assessment, I easily learned a valuable lesson about becoming a nurse, and how I should take my personality into consideration while becoming a nurse. Because I am determined to become a nurse, I am willing to become a more social person; but if I were not willing to become more social, Focus 2 claimed that I would excel quite well in many different types of jobs.…

At the beginning of the semester I was somewhat intimated by the amount of course work that was expected of each student in this class. However, as time went on and I started to complete the assignments, it became clear how useful many of them were, particularly the resume and the career exploration paper. Both of these assignments were beneficial in their own way, despite the time and effort that went in to completing them according to the instructions. The resume and subsequent critiques from multiple sources yielded a professional document that is flawless and ready to be disseminated to potential employers after a minor customization to it based upon the job description and requirements. The career exploration assignment has taught me how…

Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

The beginning of my first semester at the University of Akron, has been a complete roller coaster. I have made friends, lost friends, dropped classes and of course, slept through classes. Being five hours away from my home in South Bend, Indiana has affected me more than I thought it would. I came into college thinking that I would make a ton of friends, get excellent grades and maybe even go to a few parties. I did not think that I would be close to almost dropping out of college as a whole.…

These different assessments contributed to a deeper understanding of my skills and personality.
