Campus safety has always been a major priority for most colleges across the country. This unfortunately wasn’t the case for some universities back then. On April 16, 2007, a Virginia tech Senior managed to kill a total of 32 people on campus. Campus safety soon than became an important issue for universities around the nation and the outcome of this incident is best described as a “trigger for the growing number of campus safety resources nationwide”, said by Jill Castellano. As every year passes since the incident, it is less likely a student will encounter a potential dangerous situation on campus. These tall blue lighted poles are very expensive, but are worth every penny for universities. Each of these tall blue lighted poles come with a phone that will immediately connect the caller to campus police with a press of a button in a situation of emergency. To some universities, they find the Blue-Light phone to be outdated and useless to students because everyone in this day and age has a smart phone. Many including Florida State University find them to be extremely useful. In 2012 the Blue-Light pole helped Florida State campus police catch a suspected rapist who attacked a student. So why else do some universities hang on to these Blue-Light poles? Simply that cell phone batteries can run out of charge and people cannot get signals in certain areas. Lastly Robin Hattersley Gray, editor of Campus Safety Magazine, makes a great point stating that, “During an emergency, the stress of it all can rattle folks so much that they aren’t able to dial a three- or seven-digit number. Just being able to push one button helps with that”. This is easily on of the most critical and effective resource a college campus offers to provide safety for everyone on
