If the slightest irregularity is shown, doctors can interpret that that baby is in distress and opt for a C-section. "The increased level of fetal surveillance has led to increased rates of intrapartum cesarean delivery for presumed abnormalities in fetal status, but the use of electronic monitoring has not been shown to improve the overall rate of perinatal mortality or cerebral palsy...," according to The Journal of the American Medical Association.
