Challenges Of A Hero Policy

Business organizations today have many challenges. In addition to selling quality goods and services for a profit, employers are responsible for creating a safe and healthy environment for their employees as well as their customers. In an effort to ensure an environment that is reasonably free from health hazards and criminal activity, for both the employees and customers, management bears the responsibility of creating a set of environmental standards that are both practical and enforceable. These standards consist of policies and procedures that will include instructions and expectations of employee behavior in relation to customer services. For most organization, non-compliance of customer related policies could expose the company to negative …show more content…
Since most people are inherently good, at least I believe they are, seeing someone in need of help and doing little or nothing about is a very difficult concept to swallow. In my opinion, courage, compassion and integrity are the key components of an individual’s morality, and this policy is basically ordering employees to be selfish, that is, think of your own job and self-preservation before you decide to play hero. The main reason why people do not get involved when someone is in trouble is due to a fear factor. Police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical service workers and military personnel are all highly trained and highly skilled to get involved when serious trouble rears its ugly head. Their courage, compassion and integrity overcome the fear of getting involved with the apprehension of criminals. Their first priority is to save or protect the lives of the citizenry at all costs, and they enthusiastically perform their duties at the risk of their own lives. This concept is what makes the “Hero” policy work. Employees who witness a crime have the recourse of alerting trained professionals to apprehend the bad guys. “Hero” policies mandate this course of …show more content…
If you manage to come out of a robbery safe and sound after you averted a theft, the way Blake did in scenario 2, your employer could fire you for violating company policy. In fact, your employee doesn’t need a reason to fire you if you’re an at-will employee. Employment-at-will can be exercised by any employer on any employee. According to Bredeson (2012), “Most employees in America are employees-at-will, which means that they can be fired at any time, for almost any reason.” While employment-at-will firings may seem unfair and they quite are most of the time, in this particular case, when dealing with this specific policy, the firing may be due to a case of non-compliance. Non-compliance is the intentional and deliberate refusal to follow company policies and procedures. I whole heartedly agree that an employee should be terminated if he tries to be a hero in any way shape or form. This is the very best way to enforce this policy. There are a lot of people that have seen way too many movies and want to play the hero role. I personally believe that most people who choose this course of action usually gets themselves hurt or killed. If you manage to come out of a criminal situation, safe and sound after attempting to avert a criminal act, you should be terminated, no exceptions. The employment-at-will law is designed to protect employers.

Reasoning: Maryland law recognizes a small loop whole the general rule of at-will employment. As per the law the exception for the common rule of at-will employment is applied in the case: (1) "where an employee has been fired for refusing to violate the law or the legal rights of a third party," and (2) "where [an] employee has been terminated for exercising a specific legal right or duty," Because Milton does not fit in either category, his suit for wrongful discharge was properly dismissed.…

According to the textbook, an employment at-will “allows the company or the worker to break the work relationship at any point in time, with or without any particular reason, as long as in doing so, no law is violated (325).” The company is going to claim that Charlene was fired because her one mistake cost them thousands and thousands of dollars and if this occurred once then it could occur again in the future. They will also state that her contract extended the first three years because her work performance those years were satisfactory. However, this year her performance was not good and did not meet their expectations and therefore had to let go of her because she was costing them money instead of bringing in money. If the organization keeps an employee who cannot do their job then not only is the organization harmed but also the employee.…
