On August 25, 2015 a seventy-two-year-old woman was found severely neglected by her caregiver; according to Hayes “the woman had bugs coming out of her mouth and wore a diaper that hadn 't been changed in some time… They described the woman as living among numerous cockroaches, in a house where a sink full of dishes gave off a strong odor.” Extreme cases like this are the ones that make people wonder how can a person be capable of abusing a defenseless elder. It is a horrible act, unforgivable some may say but the reality of the situation is that it happens, individuals that abuse their elders have different reasons to do it; some do it out of pleasure, some out of anger, others do it as an effect of stress related to the responsibility of taking care of an elder, while other caregivers have disabilities themselves, suffer from anxiety, or have a difficult relationship with the elder. …show more content…
Regardless of the reason why people abuse their elders, this behavior is cruel and unacceptable; Elder abuse should be addressed by providing training sessions to the family members that will be now caring for their elders, providing stress releasing sessions to employees in nursing homes and educating communities on what are possible signs and symptoms of abuse so that they can report it to the
