Baca grew up in the lower class so just like most minorities Baca had no power over his own life. All throughout the novel Baca was always known to get the short end of the stick no matter what the situation was. With his father being away and his mom abandoning him, Baca was forced to live in an orphanage with his brother. In the book it was said that Baca had no power to be who he wanted to be. He described his stay at the orphanage as a jail house instead of an orphanage. Just like every orphanage there are many rules and the children are under adult supervision 24/7 and these adults were the ones who had most of the power over Baca. Only time Baca was allowed to leave the orphanage was to attend school but he had to return back as soon as school was over. He felt as if he had no control over his life and it led him to be very curious on what the world was like outside of the orphanage. He began to be very troublesome; he stated that the “detention center” taught him how to intimidate others with his stare, lie to authorities with a “smile”, and to think that it was him versus everyone else. In other words, he had the mindset of “me against the world”. The orphanage caused Baca to rebel and become violent due to the lack of power he had of his own life. It can have a negative as well as positive influence on their life. Family is so important and if one does not have the support of family they will most likely rebel, and become violent due to the lack of positives resources in their life. Everyone wants to grow up in a picture perfect family but sometimes that isn’t realistic. Secondly, growing up as a minority one should always try to beat the statistics instead of joining the cycle. Baca went down the wrong path growing up but soon changed his destiny to become a famous writer. He grew up in poverty both parents left him but he woke up one day and stopped feeling sorry for himself and he made a change. With that being said, anyone can start today and make a change in their lives no matter what happened in the past. Baca is living proof that you can come from nothing, get abandoned by both parents, live in an orphanage, and do five years in a state prison, but in the end find a passion and make a
