Assessment Situation The assessment was administered on February 1st, President’s Day. Both Dan and Dan’s mom were off that day, because of the holiday and so it was an ideal time to meet. I visited him at his home to administer the test. I chose to administer the test in the afternoon because it fit well with Dan’s schedule and Dan would not be tired. Dan is a close family friend and therefore Dan was not nervous while talking to me. I introduced the assessment like a game. In addition, I told Dan, “I want to see how much you know for I can tell my friends at school, how smart you are”. Dan was thrilled and up for the challenge. The assessment took about fifteen minutes not including the break. Dan moved quickly through the assessment, eagerly …show more content…
Dan showed strength when asked to show less than five fingers. However, when the numbers increased passed five, Dan showed some weakness. Number readiness. Dan showed weakness in the number readiness domain. He showed strength in the first question. When he was able to add two and one. However, when the shapes increase, Dan was confused and stated incorrect responses. He was no longer adding the shapes together, he was stating the number of objects in each square. The rationale for creating this goal is for Dan can improve his penmanship. On the personal print portion of the assessment, Dan showed a weakness in his handwriting and he also held the pencil with a fist grip. This goal will allow Dan to work on how to hold a pencil in a pinto grasp form. Dan will use a pencil grip to help position his hand properly while writing. In addition, the kindergarten primer paper will guide his handwriting to fit in the lines appropriately. Reversals will be accepted because this goal is majority working on Dan’s fine motor skills and penmanship. This is an important skill and is a part of the Florida state standards. The standard L.K.1.A states, kindergarten students should be able to “print many upper and lowercase letters” (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2018). Besides this being a Florida state standard, this is an important life skill. Writing your name clearly is a skill used all the time. This goal will allow Dan to master his

It became evident that while Athena was confident in reading, writing and ordering numbers up to and beyond the thousands, which aligns with the Year 4 ‘Number and Place Value’ content descriptor in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (ACMNA072), her lack of understanding about place value within a base-ten system meant that she could not interpret numbers comfortably in order to solve problems to align with (ACMNA073) (ACARA, 2016). While she knows the procedures for adding and subtracting numbers that bridge decades and hundreds and can show correct working out on paper, her mental strategies regarding place value needed practice. It was determined that activities in which manipulatives could support the mental strategies needed could help, as suggested by Burns (2004).
