The Importance Of Brainology

Our mindset is what makes us confident or doubtful. It is one of the factors that determines our success or failure as well as shaping our attitude towards situations. Our mindset shapes us as we grow from childhood to adulthood, whether it be fixed or growth mindset. In the article, “Brainology” by Carol Dweck, she describes both mindsets. In a fixed-mindset, people must strive for success while avoiding failure at all costs. Failure dismantles a person’s confidence with a fixed-mindset and is a setback to take on academic challenges. However, with a growth-mindset, the person takes on challenges to learn, develop and values criticism as a way to make themselves a better student. Failure teaches us how to be better and everyone should value it. I would have improved my confidence by avoiding having a fixed-mindset in high school. A lack of confidence, will prevent a person taking risks, accepting new challenges, from stretching themselves beyond their existing comfort zone. Confidence builds success and without it leads to a fear of failure, self-doubt, and negative expectations. To overcome this you must build your self-confidence. I went to a high school where everyone took multiple honors and advance placement classes. It was intimidating to see all these students taking these classes where it was competitive, fast paced, and time-consuming. Having the fear of taking a tough class where I was surround with intelligent people made me feel excluded and deficient. I was very anxious and dubious. During my junior and senior year I’ve decided to take an advance placement class and it was a new experience. So I then took AP Economics and within the first couple of days I immediately dropped it. Going into the class, my expectation was that it’s going to be a difficult and going to be …show more content…
As you achieve those goals, your experience reinforces your confidence to come up. Thinking and acting positively leads to great outcomes. Positive thinking is great because you get happy and feel like you can do anything and is willing to take challenges and risks. Confidence really overcomes fear and I happened to take the courage to take an AP course knowing it would be hard with intimidating people but then failed to continue by having doubt in myself and not fully trying to see where I would end up in the

I never thought that I would be sitting on top of a washing machine waiting for my clothes to dry while at the same time, writing a shitty first draft essay. It’s amazing where education can take you. In my first semester of composition, I read “Brainology” by Carol S. Dweck and “The Student Fear Factor” by Rebecca Cox. In Brainology, Dweck explains that there are two different mindsets: a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

In GPS 1010, I have learned that a person’s mindset is established in (1) a particular way of thinking; or (2) a person’s attitude and set of opinions about something. In addition to these items, one can either have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. These mindsets play a huge role in one’s success or failure. The mindset has “two meanings to ability, not one: a fixed ability that needs to be proven and a changeable ability that can be developed through learning” and repetition. To sum up, “the fixed mindset makes you concerned with how you’ll be judged; the growth mindset makes you concerned with improving.”…

No matter what religion, culture or location people either have a growth or a fixed mindset. Those with a fixed mindset are usually people who think that their talents and intelligence can not be improved through study or practice. Failures and setbacks causes frustration and stress and can make it look like the end of the world for some. Others with growth mindset are the ones who usually use failure as an opportunity and will study hard and try their best to understand what they need to know. He points out that failure is necessary if we want to succeed in college and in life.…

I was ignorant to think those same methods would get me through what was essentially a college course.
