The amount of instruction a student receives depends on their English level. Schools used this program when they do not have a high enrollment of ELL student. I was unaware that ESL and ELL are two different concepts. While ELL is the individual itself, ESL is the program. I also learned that there are different ESL formats, but the most common ones are “pull-out” or “push-in”. Pull-out and pull-in. As the name implies, the “pull-out” ESL program is when a student is taken out of the classroom and the ESL specialist follows a curriculum that targets the students’ specific language and academic needs (Honigsfeld, 2009). In the “push-in” approach the ESL specialist is in the classroom with the ELL student. In this approach, there is more flexibility in what the ESL specialist can do.
