Algernon makes up a friend named, Bunbury. He can escape from the city when he wants to. “I have invented an invaluable permanent invalid called Bunbury, in order that I may be able to go down into the country whenever I choose. Bunbury is perfectly invaluable. If it wasn 't for Bunbury 's extraordinary bad health, for instance, I wouldn 't be able to dine with you at Willis 's to-night (Act 1 Lines 252-257).” Bunbury is Algernon’s form of Ernest. He uses Bunbury to get out of family responsibilities. Algernon uses deceit like Jack to prevent going to boring and unpleasant situations, instead they create exciting and enjoyable events for themselves. Algernon plays as Ernest and goes meet with Cecily. Cecily makes up a story about their engagement. Cecily says that they been engaged for three months and that they have broken and engaged again. “On the 14th February last… long struggle and I accepted you under this old tree here…in this box in which I keep all your dear letters (Act 3 pg.42-43).” Algernon believes in the story because he does not really know anything about Ernest engagement with Cecily. Cecily also believes how excited Algernon is with the engagement. Cecily makes up this story in order for Algernon (Ernest) to be engage with her. Algernon pretends to be Ernest to engage to Cecily. Jack also uses Ernest to be engaged with Gwendolen. Jack and Algernon both are deceiving throughout the play.
