These RA’s focus more on how being an RA can only benefit them and not the residents they are supposed to be looking after. Unsuccessful RA’s do not pose good communication skills or people skills as I call them. They might be hard for a resident to approach with a problem or something that is bothering them. I believe that my communication skills will be my best attribute when it comes to being an RA. I am a person who is very easy to talk to, I am not afraid to put myself out there in order to gain someone’s trust. I have also learned that when listening to someone’s problems they do not want to hear about your problems either. I have and ear for listening and not putting my two sense in when it comes to someone telling me of a problem they might have. I believe that the most challenging part of the RA job will be gaining the respect from my RA’s. I would like to think that if I respect them then they will respect me. But as we all know when someone hears the word “RA” they think of that someone as an authoritative figure. This is not what I want people to think of when they see me as their RA.
