Evaluative Essay This course was originally designed to teach students about being an English Major. It was created to be that first stepping stone towards graduating with a Major in English. While I was never an English Major, I did expect this class to be an easy course. As the semester progressed I realized that there was more to being an English Major than simply writing essays. I would like to preface this essay by saying that this class has most definitely helped me with my major as well as forcing me to think critically about the information covered in this class. The first portion of this course consisted of reading the Lemire textbook and writing questions at the end of every reading. This was an excellent idea in my opinion because the author explains not only what it takes to be an English Major but also the many options available to them. This is something that greatly benefited me. I never realized all of what English had to offer and this textbook showed the different career paths available. One problem that I did have with this section of the class was the actual written assignment due at the end of every reading. There should …show more content…
I would not have changed my major if I did not make an an appointment with them. It gave me a much larger perspective on my college career. This visit made everything seem much more real. Before this I was in that “freshman haze” where college is still about having fun and possibly graduating. This meeting made me snap out of that haze and realize what I wanted in life. It was an excellent idea to incorporate Career Services into this class. It provides students with a professional evaluation that helps them decide what major they want. This is especially important in a class such as Introduction to English Majors because it gives an opportunity to change majors if you decide that English is not for

The answer is straightforward, they make sure the student’s paper is on track and it will only help, not hurt, the paper. During my senior year the time to apply to college quickly approached, and if just that was not intimidating enough, I had to also write a college application essay. How does one write the most important essay of their career without being terrified? To avoid being frightened, I had several peer reviewers, with many being my past English teachers. Not only were the reviewers able to help me with any grammar mistakes, offer better word choices, but they were able to teach me that differing people can offer new opinions, but as long as the essay is what I wanted it to be, then it is perfect.…

Starting in my freshman year of highschool I used Adler’s and Scudder’s technique without even knowing what I was doing. All I knew it was helping me understand the material and it helped me in the long run because I passed the class. Now I understand what I need to do to write and think about a topic. I fully understand that I need to reread text to comprehend that text and underline good points in the book. Also, I should circle words I do not know to look them up later to get a greater understanding of the material.…

Professor Miller helped me grasp what they had taught me more firmly. After writing my expository essay I feel that I truly began to run with this knowledge. When we began to revise papers for Mr. Reynold’s classes I started to realize how far I had come in just a couple of years. I’m not saying that his classes were full of bad papers, but they definitely weren’t something I would expect out of someone in the Dual Enrollment classes to turn in. As I helped revise these papers, I began to compare myself to these younger writers and wonder what i would do differently.…

The semester is almost over now. I took Composition and rhetoric, obviously, because it is a compulsory course, but further than that I was truly excited to see what it could offer. English has always been my passion and a language I wanted to learn to perfection. I am glad to say that this course did not disappoint; it has been a class that helped me improved my writing abilities, as much as my comprehension skills. Whenever we desire to learn a new language it can be challenging, putting our thoughts and ideas in paper is complicated and even more when you do not do it in your mother tongue.…

As I entered AP Language and Composition, I felt confident and excited because I have always enjoyed English. I knew going into the class that it would include writing several papers, but I have enjoyed writing since I was younger; however, some of the writings are more difficult than others. For example, I seem to struggle with synthesis writings, whereas I tend to do well on argumentative writings. I already had an idea as to what I would learn and do throughout the class because I had spoken with students who took it last year, but I did not expect some of the writings to be difficult, or the Capstone paper to be stressful. I felt a little discouraged and agitated at times, but my confidence has grown because I did better than I thought…
