The Importance Of Being A Taong Grasa

“You are a Taong Grasa.” Do you believe in that? Do you consider yourself a Taong Grasa? If not, then what is a Taong Grasa? Looking on its English translation, Taong Grasa is translated to street vagrant. Hence, that means that a Taong Grasa is a homeless beggar with lots of dirt and grease all over his body because he never takes a bath, he sleeps anywhere and mainly along the streets, and the source of his food are the leftovers he can find in the garbage. With this definition, the criteria for someone to be called a Taong Grasa, he must be homeless and wanders on the streets looking for food to eat at the trash and he must be dirty with grease all over his body. Have you ever wondered what are these Taong Grasa thinking while they are roaming the perilous streets especially that of the cities? It is because of the society they are living in. Our society right now view a Taong Grasa as someone inferior in status at the society, someone who is a low-life and is useless to the community. For example, the beggars at the street asked for alms to those passerby’s but most people pretend that they don’t exist and even some rebuke these beggars which makes them hostile towards people and the society. But there are also those people who are kind-hearted and give a small amount of money to these beggars enough to at least buy a piece of pandesal. At other communities, the local government unit have constructed homes for these beggars through bayanihan and even have some kind of a workshop in the alternative learning center. Despite through the efforts of the governments to help these vagrants, some of them are still hard-headed and refuse the help of the government in improving their
