As a Site Coordinator at an after school program, it is easy for me to share my first hand observations with a vast majority of students. To begin, the layout of the site is not ideal seeing as the program is held in an Elementary school cafeteria. With 30 students enrolled in the program, it is easy for one to believe that chaos is easily accessible. Within the 30 students, ages range from 5 to 12. To avoid the said chaos, there is a lot of structure and a routine that is implemented. For instance, when students arrive to the program, the first thing they do is put their stuff down on assigned tables and find their assigned seats. After everyone has arrived and attendance has been taken, there is hand washing, snack time, and then homework. Since there are two students diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder at the program, during homework time they sit individually with a counselor so I can ensure as a Site Coordinator his/her needs are being met. In Educating Exceptional Children Kirk, Gallagher and Coleman define Autism Spectrum Disorders as, “…a variety (or spectrum) of related disorders that affect a child’s social development and ability to communicate…” (2015, pg.143). Therefore, to cut this short, I would just like to share that I am grateful for the position I am given and would not change it for the world. The amount of astonishing observations I make a day is beyond memorable. To be given the chance to watch these students grow right before my eyes is something I would not give up for the world. Also, working with Owen and Tyler has been such a learning experience thus far. I hope everyone in the Education field gets to work with at least one student with a disability throughout his/her
