Is It as Easy as A-B-C?
Just imagine a regular day of teaching in a pre-k class. Something wacky is always happening along with eye-opening learning experiences. Before heading straight into the classrooms, teachers must learn how to instruct the proper way in order for these experiences to happen. There are many colleges that offer different degrees and majors for those wanting to become teachers. The challenging but achievable education and certification, the fun job description along with the auspicious job outlook makes teaching an excellent profession to enter.
In order to become a preschool teacher one must major in early childhood education and earn a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, which usually takes four years of college. Typically someone going to school to become a teacher spends the last two years of college studying childhood education. During these last two years, they are required to spend a certain amount of hours a semester in a classroom observing. Once a teacher earns their Bachelor’s degree, they have to become certified in early childhood education. In order to do this they have to take a test, the Praxis. “The test is used to determine if an aspiring teacher is eligible for licensing or certification (“Early Childhood Education” 3).

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “most states require teachers to complete continuing education credits to maintain their license (4).” There are also monthly faculty meetings and workshops to take part in. The Louisiana Early Childhood Association (LAECA) is an all day conference for all the early childhood education teachers in Louisiana to attend. Even during the summer there are institutes to attend at least two times (McQueen 7). Teachers are also graded on at least two formal observations.
