Being a modern person means your goal in life is to strive to become the best. Whether it 's through college or finding something you love out of highschool we strive to become better. We have envy and jealousy towards the higher class. We think to ourselves how lucky they are. The american dream is education and work. Yes, education and work is available but that doesn 't necessarily result in being rich.

This laundry business specialized towards washing knickerbockers and other pieces of clothing for the rich. Dexter became the richest man in the county for his age. He started out in the middle class but he kept on pushing. Now Dexter has more money than he ever dreamed of.
Now in life there is the group that has hope, they fight for what they want. But there is also the group that loses hope or has already lost it. They quit fighting, they give up. This is what separates the people who strive to become better and the people who accept where they are in life. In From the Dark Tower by Countee Cullen, it says that humans were not made to be forever depressed. But some people do not have the strength that others possess. Dexter had faith that he could become better but Cullen writes about how others do not.
Shown here, “And there are buds that cannot bloom at all, In light, but crumple, piteous, and fall; So in the dark we hide the heart that bleeds, And wait, and tend our agonizing seeds” Now I doubt they have lost all hope. Desmoines case. John Tinker and some other students wore an armband to school protesting the Vietnam war. Silently fighting for what they believe is right the school did not approve of this and suspended the students for not removing the armbands. The students had the ability to take the school to court and say this is our freedom of speech. The students and the school both fighting for what they believe is right. Being a controversial topic both parties had good points. In the past days in our society we were not allowed to fight for what we believe in. Just like in From the Dark Tower, Cullen had started losing her hope because we were not allowed to fight for our beliefs. Things are different now and we can fight for what we believe in.
