Being A Positive Role Model

Improved Essays
Looking in the mirror at an early age I would tell myself, I can’t wait until I am a parent. I’ve always knew I wanted to be a mother and growing up I thought I would have at least four kids. Children have always fascinated me. Growing up being the big sister in a household with two brothers didn’t prepare me for what it was like having children of my own. I have two beautiful daughters who love to push all my buttons but also push me to be a better person and mother. I believe what has helped me through the years being a good parent is being open minded, patient, and a positive role model.

Trying to be open minded is hard especially when dealing with your children. You may think that what you believe in is the best and only way for your child.

I always felt I need to practice what I preach. It was eating me alive that I would say to my girls that you need to get a college degree and I didn’t have one. When I was looking within at how I could be a better person I decided to go back to school. Every grade I get I make sure my kids can see it. They make fun of me because I am upset that I have a 3.90 GPA instead of a 4.0. This has been a transitional school year for them as they started new schools, being a middle schooler and a freshman isn’t easy. My youngest is getting great grades, I couldn’t be any prouder and my oldest is working hard to bring hers up. I believe I played a part in that by showing them if I can do it they can as well. It is important to me with being a positive role model to my kids. They are looking at me every step of the way. If they want to acknowledge it or not, they are watching and learning directly from me.

Being a parent is hard work, in a sense it is another job. While you don’t get any financial gain, more like depletion of your funds, parenting is very rewarding. I wouldn’t change being a mother for anything in the world. Just like any job you need certain skill sets and characteristics. I believe the characteristics of a good parent is being open minded, patient, and a positive role model. These three have helped me tremendously with raising my children. I hope that I will pass these characteristics on to them to help raise and mold successful and beautiful

The definition of a good parent may vary from person to person, due to past history and experiences. A person’s history could also affect a person’s parenting style. For example, if someone was raised in a home without love and security, as a parent, they may also raise their children in an environment lacking those things because that is how they grew up and they may be ignorant as to how to better raise their children. There are many significant characteristics that most people would use to describe a good parent, such as, the ability to protect and stay strong for both, themselves and their child or children, in tough situations, the ability to always be looking out for the well-being of the child and loving them unconditionally in spite…
