I heard him coughing as he opened the door to his room and staggered to the bathroom to throw up. We had gotten food poisoning before, so I just assumed that my twin brother must have eaten some bad chicken. I could not have been farther from the truth. However, it was his illness that truly solidified my desire to be a doctor so I could do everything in my power to prevent others from experiencing
My twin’s name is Mario, and we have always done everything together. We played soccer together, were on the drumline together, we always had the same friends, everything was the same except for our academic passions. It was our first semester of college, but he would go on to miss almost half of it. After throwing up all night long, my mom picked

The nights were the hardest part for him; he could not stay asleep due to the pain in his back, and he struggled going to the bathroom because he would almost always feint when he would stand up. I would wake up with him in the middle of the night and have him sit in a rolly chair so I could wheel him to the bathroom. He was unable to take his pain medicine until very late at night, so I would stay up with him and massage his back to help take the pain away. One night, it was close to 4 in the morning when I was massaging his back that I truly confirmed my desire to be a doctor. It is curious that such a minute detail could have such an impact on my life, but the fact that I was tired and weary, and I still wanted to help, was what really allowed me to discover what I wanted to do with my life. I thought about how no matter how tired I am, my brother was feeling worse. It felt like it was my duty to take care of him. Now, I want to be able to deliver such care to as many people as possible. To be able to selflessly take care of another individual is something unlike any other profession. After weeks of this going on, and about half of the semester …show more content…
Being able to make a decision in terms of what to do about an individual’s health is incredible, and the rewards are even more so. I remember speaking to a surgeon about his career, and he said that the best part of the job is when a patient finally leaves the hospital, and knowing that they have been cured. I have visualized myself in this situation countless times; to be able to do to others what the doctors did for my twin brother seems to me like the greatest job in the world. Not only did the doctors heal my brother, but they reignited my passion for being a doctor, after some doubt began to set in. They changed my life simply by doing their job, and it is my goal to one day inspire others to also pursue such an amazing

This interest had been further strengthened by my exposure to the healthcare when my dad went through an operation 2 years ago. I recognized the responsibility the doctors had in order to work together to bring him to ease immediately after the operation and through the recovery period. INTRODUCTION A. Attention Getter: When you consider someone who has made a difference, you may think of Martin Luther King Jr. or Anne Frank, but it is likely that you have made a difference. The following quote, published in Change Your Heart, Change Your Life (2007, p. 33), was originally given by an original author: “When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family.…

I learned how to take care of a dying patient, but I also learned how to support the family. This situation was very hard to deal with. I remember a lot of the nurses being upset because they had remembered her from earlier. The patient wasn’t talking so I had to learn the best way to communicate with her. She did pretty well with shaking her head yes or no for the first couple days.…

The morning of Saturday November 1st, 2014, I woke up to three hundred text messages and twitter notifications all notifying me that my friend, Dominik Pettey, was killed in a car crash by a drunk driver the previous night. No pain had ever felt so significant, it was crippling, but then instead of pain, I was numbed by the inability to grasp that my friend someone who I just had seen the night before, was gone. I ran the words “Dom is dead” through my head on a loop but could not bring myself to accept it. That week, although I was still here, facing such a tragedy, everything on earth seemed so insignificant, going to class, homework, midterms, everything. I woke up every morning wishing it was just in a bad dream and that noise would never cease because that is when it hit me the most, silence, when I didn't hear Dom’s infectious laugh or when he wasn't telling me that, “I am Kiera Wainer and deserve the best God can give”, which he used to say anytime I was upset, the first time he said those words was the second worst day of my entire life, it was the day my dad left for his new family.…

This journey has made me who I am now; a very dedicated health care provider caring for patients, striving to provide quality care and being the patients’ advocate at all times. I am extremely interested in learning new things, because life for me is a learning process and I thrive every day to increase my knowledge in all the things…

Although I had volunteered in hospitals and worked on patient floors, my experience with this patient forced me to see a side of medicine that I was previously unaware of. At that very moment as I was walking down the stairs to my ambulance I was seriously questioning my motivation to become a doctor. I sat in the passenger seat of the ambulance asking the question that every pre-med student asks himself or herself: “Do I really want to be a Doctor”? I had transported many patients from nursing homes to their appointment so I questioned what was it about this particular patient that had altered me and made me so deeply saddened? From a very young age I had been unyielding in my desire to become a doctor and my personal, academic, or work experiences had never placed this desire in any doubt.…

The way the streetlights illuminated the dark, aged cobblestone of the city I used to call home always seemed to bring me a sense of peacefulness. But not on this night. The lights gleamed with a tinge of red, the cobblestone streets which I've walked down since I was just a child had a cold and unwelcoming look to them. Tonight is different. Everything is different.…

The most important thing to ever happen to me is without a doubt the death of my father. That moment in time has, and will, continue to shape my life until the day I die. I have a passion for the science of medicine and for providing care. While it was initially my interest in science and biology that prompted me to enter college as a pre-medical student, my experiences volunteering in the medical field have strengthened my conviction to become a doctor and have shown me how rewarding the field of medicine is. I have worked in clinics as well as emergency rooms and have observed doctors and patients in both settings. I have seen how through the help of a caring doctor, patient’s become at ease and how a patient doctor relationship can become a strong bond that lasts for many years. The doctors that I have worked with have inspired me in my career goals and I believe that medicine is the right career path for…

The wonders of medicine may seem strange and disturbing if viewed at the surface level, but if really thought about, medicine is amazing and beautiful.
