I chose this career because I’ve always wanted to work in the medical field. However, I’m not one for needles and blood. This raises a little bit of a problem because that is mainly all that the medical field deals with. Despite that, dermatology doesn’t overly deal with these things - making it possible for me to choose this career. It is also something I could see myself enjoy doing until I retire. However, getting accepted into a medical school can be a process. First, the individual will need to submit an application along with the scores of their MCAT. The school will then request a more detailed second application from the individual regarding their interest to the institution. This application will include an essay and requires the candidate to submit letters of recommendation. After reviewing all the required information, the school will then schedule an interview. After the interview, the individual will be notified whether they have been accepted or not. Once accepted, students will spend their first 4 years studying medicine. During the first two years, students will spend most of their time in academic study where they attend lectures, sit in classrooms, and work in labs. The curriculum is focused on life sciences and chemistry. Students can also expect to study the areas of physiology, histology, microbiology, pathology, biochemistry, human and gross anatomy (Willson). During the second year, students will be required to take the first part of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). This exam evaluates one’s ability to apply basic sciences to the practice of medicine. The second part of the exam will be administered during the senior year of medical school. The application for the exam must be filed on March 1st of the year on which the candidate intends to take the exam. All of the required training requirements must be met in order to take the exam. Annual evaluation reports from the individual 's training director will also be reviewed. The board will then review the application and determine whether or not to accept the candidate. Once approved, the exam must be taken within two years from the date that the individual is granted eligibility. The fee to take the exam is $2,200.00 with other fees assessed for subspecialty certifications and
