You are not eligible in any sport if, after you become a student athlete, you accept any pay for promoting a commercial product or service or allow your name or picture to be used for promoting a commercial product or service. (NCAA) But ironically, the student athletes are required to sign a release that allows both the NCAA and university to use their names, likenesses and images for any purpose. The long time debate of whether or not to pay student athletes for their work on the field has been battled for years. Currently the NCAA is providing resources to aid in the success of 460,000 college athletes that make up 19,000 teams (NCAA.org). The resources they are providing, include: compensation for room and board, tuition, and books. To give money beyond those things: has the potential to ruin the authenticity of college athletics, will produce unfairness throughout each of the sports, and blurs the line of the privileges these student athletes receive. I believe that academics come first and if a high school student wants to be an athlete, then getting good grades should be a requirement. It should be mandatory for teachers and coaches to check the grades of student athletes weekly to determine whether students are performing academically well or not.
