Classroom behaviors strongly influence one’s ability to achieve academic or social success. When misbehaviors interfere with learning, a number of positive supports can be employed to encourage on-task engagement and classroom participation. Specific interventions can also target problem behaviors or motivate students into achieving the desired behavioral expectations.
When students like Doug have difficulties with written expression and copying, they become frustrated when asked to perform tasks that require these skills. Therefore, offering Doug options for demonstrating academic knowledge can serve as a motivator for completing independent assignments and reducing off-task behaviors. Choice making is one such intervention that has been shown to be effective for increasing task engagement and improving student performance (Cole & Levinson, 2002).
Since Doug has access to a computer in the classroom, he can decide whether to use it to complete written assignments or write the assignment by hand. Students with written expression difficulties benefit from the use of various assistive technologies to help them compensate for this disorder (Lindstrom, 2007). Doug should be taught strategies that further develop his writing abilities to support self-regulation and control of the writing process (García & de Caso, 2004). Using educational computer writing apps can provide the practice he needs to become a more confident writer. He can choose from an array of writing programs that will allow him to play games while he is learning the writing process.
