This would be caused by the influence alcohol has on the frontal lobe which is the major area of the brain that has to deal with the consequences of drinking. The frontal lobe is where our ability to make good decisions and recognize the significance of actions is stemmed from. Tyler’s mind progressively became fuzzier as the night proceeded. Even if someone had attempted to stop Tyler from driving a vehicle, he wouldn’t have been able to have the self-control needed to realize they were trying to help him. Instead, the alcohol in his body would have flared his mood causing him to act irrationally and aggressively. They were on an adrenaline high; there was nothing that could have gone wrong in their minds. The three only had to travel a mile away to make it home safe. Their impaired mind would have given them the false impression that they were completely competent in driving, even after all of the drinks they had consumed. Almost everyone will experience a time in their life when they simply think to themselves, “No way! That won’t happen to me”.
In summary, psychoactive drugs are strong stimulants or depressants that can drastically alter a person’s behaviors, abilities and reactions. Depressants specifically are known to delay chemical neurotransmitters within the brain that directly lead to slowed responses and lowered self-control. In Tyler’s case, his body was filled with too much alcohol to be able to make a smart judgement call which resulted in his death and the injury of two of his best friends.
