What It Takes to Become an ESL Teacher

There are many people who hear about how wonderful it is to teach ESL (English as a second language) to immigrants and spontaneously decide to enter the field. They believe that all they have to do is take a few classes, then find a teaching job with a great school. Unfortunately, the process of becoming an ESL teacher is not quite that easy, and those who want to enter the field should make their decision carefully.

If you are considering becoming an ESL teacher, the first thing you have to consider is whether or not you should get into the field at all. I say this because in order for you to become a truly effective teacher, it 's important that you get into the field for the right reasons.

It 's not to travel the world and see exotic places. (Although I have traveled myself, and I think it 's an incredible experience!) It 's not to meet new people. And it 's certainly not to make a lot of money. Although some of these things are the fringe benefits of teaching English to non-native speakers, they are not the primary reason you should become a teacher.

The main reason you should get into the ESL field is to help those who need to learn English significantly improve the quality of their lives. You must understand that for many people around the world mastering English can mean the difference between living a life of struggle and living a life of joy and freedom. If you want to be a truly great teacher, then you must start from the point that the benefit to you is being able to serve others. Everything else is just icing on the

Testing: Tests and quizzes provide the teacher with valuable feedback about student progress. They 're not perfect, but they do give you a good sense of whether or not your students are moving forward. Not only do you have to know how to properly administer them, but you must also know how to present the results in such a way that the students with the lowest scores don 't lose confidence in themselves.

7. Tracking: Beyond test scores, there are a number of things a teacher is required to track. You will also have to record such things as the grades for various assignments, attendance, and student goals. If your school receives funding from a government agency, then the amount of information you 'll have to track may be daunting. It takes someone with very strong organizational skills to do this while doing all the other things necessary to maintain an effective class.

8. Reporting: Teachers must provide regular reports to coordinators and directors concerning all the things they 're tracking about their students. Those in management are usually running on tight deadlines, so it 's very important that you as the teacher provide them with the information they need in a timely manner. It 's also important that you speak up about any problems you 're having in order to get them corrected as quickly as

As I previously stated, I come from an average middle class family so I never was in the shoes of a culturally and linguistically diverse student. From the stories of my peers and what I have learned in ESL courses, this relationship is arguably the most important in an ESL student’s educational career. The attitude of a teacher can either greatly aid in building the student’s confidence and seal their path to success, as was the case with Robert in Literacy con Cariño, or can greatly deter a child from ever wanting to risk the possible failure that comes with learning a new…

Section 1 of the Florida Consent Decree explains the identification and assessment process regarding limited English proficiency students. Students with limited English proficiency, or students whose native language is not English, lives in an environment where English is not spoken, or have a difficult time speaking, reading, writing, or listening to English, must be appropriately classified as requiring to participate in ESOL instruction so that the student can receive special educational opportunities. As soon as a student is enrolled into school, the student will be evaluated through a series of questions to determine whether or not a student is classified as requiring ESOL instruction. If a student answers "yes" to any of the questions asked in the previously mentioned evaluation, then the student will be evaluated to determine whether or not he or she is proficient in the English language. If a student is determined not to be proficient in English, then he or she will be set up for a 3-year funded program that gives him or her special instruction at school.…

A crucial piece of teaching that can positively impact all students, and particularly English Language Learners (ELL), is using model programs that help make lessons more applicable to ELL students. One example of a model program that has shown success is the AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation’s creation of the Every Child Ready model. There are many career fields that involve children, but I always like the thought of becoming a teacher for younger students. Children have bigger imagination than adults do. They always get fascinated about anything new that they’ve learned. An elementary school teacher is someone who instructs children from grades first to fourth. I want to become someone who will teach younger students things that they begin to learn at that age.…

During my observation of an ESL push-in classroom, I have come across with many pedagogical issues and concerns that were brought in the Methods of Teaching class. Such topics include the use of cooperative Learning, classroom setting, adapting lesson plan and differentiated instructions by incorporating visuals, hands-on activities, simulations of real life situations etc so that students can nurture their skills academically, linguistically, socially as well as emotionally. The purpose of this report is to focus solely on the two major components of teaching-learning environment, and the components are relatively described as the classroom environment and the participation of students in relation with what I have learned in this class. When I entered the classroom, the first thing fascinated me was that all the four word walls were well labeled in both the languages(English and Spanish) with appropriate pictures. The setting of the room was safely configured, and convenient as well as appealing to the kids.…

“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning”. (Brad Henry) Not every person can be a teacher; it takes a certain kind of individual to be a teacher. Some qualities that teachers consume are patient, kindness, passionate, knowledge, and heart, also there are other many formal qualities that a teacher must need to be successful. At twelve years old in seventh grade I had this teacher that inspired me to become a teacher and ever since then, becoming a teacher has been a priority.…
