Dona Lanceslin: A Short Story

Waking up two hours early than she should just to get to the office to set up and make sure everything is running properly, is part of the heedfulness daily routine of Dona Lanceslin. As she walks through the office, she turns on all the electronic devices to make sure they are working properly for her workers. This particular morning, she went out and brought them donuts for breakfast. “You have to treat your workers here and there to show them they’re appreciated too.”, is what she told me after I told her that was nice of her. Her next step was checking her calendar to see what she had to do for the day. So happen she didn’t have anything to do until noon.
She took me for a walk around the neighborhood to check on the different people making sure everything was okay. She told me, “being the person I am, I don’t wait until problems come to the office, I go out and check on things as well.” I thought, wow she isn’t just like that with us, it’s with others as well. As I sat down to talk with her, she gave me this beautiful smile as she always does. Thoughtful, full of enthusiasm, with a warm heart is Donna “The Great” Lanceslin, as she would call herself. She held that position for forty-one years. That was her only job right after college. “I had two English teachers that played a role in why I wanted to become an English teacher. I also love children which also played a part in me wanting to become an English teacher.”, is what she reflected back on about her passion. Donna said that this was one of her best decisions. “I raised two of my grandchildren from birth”, she continued. She felt she wanted her two children that were in college to be great so she took their kids and raised them for the two.
