My hair was long and wavy. My family told me that I looked very beautiful. Once I got back to school that night many people was complimenting me and congratulating me as well. Not too many people knew that I was one of the homecoming princesses. There was also some people who just looked as if they wanted to say something but didn’t know how to approach me. I didn’t let that bother me because I knew some of them probably thought I was feeling myself such as thinking I was better than them but that wasn’t the case. Anyone could’ve been in my place if they really wanted to. When it was time to walk on the football field, I was a little bit nervous having to stand in front of all those people. But when it was time to walk on the football with my grandfather escorting me I felt something lifted off of me. My name was called and I could hear people from the stands shouting for me and everything else. As I walked up the field I held my head up high like a statue with confidence and smiled. At that point I was a princess. In my head I was thinking about how my aunt told me, “Being a princess is really not about looking beautiful or wearing a crown it’s about who you are on the inside.” And I knew I was an amazing person inside and out. For a moment I thought what if I got to be crowned Homecoming Queen? That would’ve really made me stand out for the year. I didn’t get crowned Homecoming Queen but I still felt honored standing there as a Homecoming

High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. It is a major time of growth for adolescents and serves as a stepping stone into the adult world, giving students the skills and experiences needed to be successful later in life. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

“The Jacket” Fictional Narrative Assessment Gary Soto’s “The Jacket” tells the story of a jacket that the author received when he was in 6th grade. The jacket his mother lovingly purchased for him was NOT the kind of jacket he had asked for, and in his eyes, brought him three years of bad luck. Rewrite Soto’s personal narrative as if his mother HAD bought him the neat jacket - “like bikers wear: black leather and silver studs with enougt belts to hold down a small town.” Tell your version from the day the author sees the jacket on his bedpost, to the end of day when he first wore the new jacket to school. Commencing Unbound A lurid, fuchsia dress with generously powdered glitter and blaring, familiar music danced to by relatives you weren't even aware were relatives are trademarks of the traditional rite of passage into adulthood in my culture and one I never had the pleasure to experience due to my family's financial situation at that time. Still, my own stride into coming of age was too one with renowned garb, although much less garish. Familiar music playing in the background and only my immediate family sat close to the stage in awe to watch me. Graduating from my esteemed high school, Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH), was the omega to the alpha of my future. That experience both humbled me and triggered the tenacity in me to…

Starting first grade I thought we were the top dogs because we got moved down to the bigger playground with the bigger kids. Since they knew we liked kick ball so much they built a kick ball diamond for us. There was just so much to do in the shortest amount of time. Everyday was a new day, I never did the same thing, whether it was playing on the upper part on the monkey bars seeing who could hang the longest or playing football with the guys. I can remember my first year at kickball I was taller than most of the guys because they haven’t hit their growth spurt yet, so everyone wanted me on their team because I was the only girl once again that was better than most of the guys.…

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been taught about what a girl should and shouldn’t do, what a girl should or shouldn’t wear, and even what a girl should or shouldn’t be. And as I got older my identity has slowly conformed to these gender ideas. But, what if when I was younger I hadn’t been taught about gender and what if gender ideals wouldn’t have been pushed onto us by the media? Would I be the same person that I am today, or would I be someone completely different? I would hope that I would be the same person now, but I do not believe that that would be the case.…
