The steelhead trout used to be a native species to the Arroyo Del Valle in Pleasanton, California. Some are anadromous fish (i.e. they spend most of their time in freshwater developing after they hatch and then spend part of their later life in the sea or ocean) but others will remain in a freshwater stream or creek their entire lives. Typically, anadromous populations swim up the creek in winter to lay their eggs and then swim back, leaving the eggs to develop on their own. In order to lay their eggs, female steelhead trout need a stream riffle with a gravel bottom. The eggs then hatch, and the newborn steelhead (alevin) soon develop into fry that consume zooplankton for subsistence.…

Boating down the Wabash River near Lafayette on July 16, I witnessed firsthand the broad, winding river’s scenic beauty, but also got a lesson in the environmental challenges the river faces when two Asian carp hurled themselves out of the water and landed in our boat. The Wabash is Indiana’s iconic river and inspiration for our state song, yet in recent years two species of invasive Asian carp have infested portions of it. These voracious non-native fish consume nutrients in the water, disrupting the food chain and threatening the native fish enjoyed by Hoosier anglers and sportsmen. At the sound of outboard motors, groups of Asian carp will jump out of the water and can injure boaters.…

There are three trout species native to Colorado; the Colorado River Cutthroat, the Greenback Cutthroat, and the Rio-Grande Cutthroat. All three of these species were a product of the Pleistocene epoch: a turbulent time when enormous glaciers covered the northern border and into the western and eastern borders of Colorado. During these glacial periods, the ice front advanced and retreated in pulses, each lasting many thousands of years. With each advance, the courses of rivers and streams were shifted from north to south.…

Finesse Fishing Finesse fishing is pretty much nothing more than "Down Sizing" a particular type of bait or lure. When it comes to winter fishing, or times throughout the year that are considered to be in-active, most anglers will find more success at catching bass by "Down Sizing" or "Finesse" fishing. Finesse fishing patterns are usually fished at a much slower rate as far as "pattern" or "technique" goes due mostly to the inactive bass during these periods. The biggest factor an angler should be aware of is that the bass’s metabolism slows way down in colder water temperatures thus making them very "in-active" or "Lethargic," and a bass will not extend great amounts of energy during these colder water temperature periods.…
