People this days are making it harder to find themselves by isolating themselves in clichés, suburbia. “There are truths that we do not see when we adopt the Language of radical Individualism.” (Bellah pg. 80)…

On Friday, June 26 2015 the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality in all fifty states. The five to four decision would forever change the lives of members in the lesbian, gay, transgender community and the rest of the country. The circumstances in which this ruling came about was tragic, the concerns around the case caused a lot of controversy but clearly the right decision was made. I really don’t understand why people don’t get this. I realize that it may be difficult for some to expand their traditional views on relationships and marriage, but we as a society need to accept the fact that others have qualities that make them slightly different yet we are all the same.…

Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a narrative that retells the events leading up to the death of Santiago Nasar. Throughout the novella, there are many instances in which a man is in a place of power, however, the female characters often are denied this opportunity. Power can be defined as having the ability to stand up for yourself or others, make your own decisions, and having an important role in society. It is the sole characteristic that differentiates men from women in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Despite the few instances where women are placed in positions of power, Gabriel Garcia Marquez effectively proves that women are depicted as powerless through the use of machismo throughout the story, integrating Colombian gender roles…

In the article, "In Praise of Margins" by Ian Frazier, he states how "marginal people or places or activities are the ones that don't quite work out"(Frazier 7). On the other hand, however, Frazier also claims that "marginal places are the bluesky research zones of the outdoors"(Frazier 7). By having marginal places to go to, one can have a place to escape from the real world to do activities that do not really account for any economical values. Simply doing activities like throwing rocks, shooting frogs, making forts, and climbing trees seem to have no purpose whatsoever to most people, but to Frazier these activities were valuable. These activities were valuable to Frazier because he did not have to feel the pressure of society to actually have…

In this paper, I defend social media’s potential to facilitate Aristotelian virtue friendship. I begin with a brief overview of Aristotle’s discussion of the nature of virtue friendship and then apply his concept of the shared life to the new frontier of social media. I will argue that virtue friendships can be found and maintained using social media, considering the mechanisms through which social media preserves the valuable portions of friendship: conversation and shared experience. Followers of Aristote should therefore conclude that this highest tier of friendship is attainable through the use of social media. Aristotle separates friendship into three distinct categories: those based on use, those based on pleasure in each other’s company,…
