One possible alternative policies, regulations that would help with the U.S. gun control problem is updating and enforcing universal and mental health background checks for all potential gun owners. In most states sales of firearms from private individuals do not need to enforce background checks -- only federal law requires licensed dealers to conduct checks. Background checks sound a lot easier than it really is because of the sheer amount of firearms that are in the United States. There are by various estimates anywhere from 270 million to 310 million guns in the states - close to one firearm for every man, woman, and child.
