I am in eighth grade. It is a sunny, warm Sunday in early fall at the St. Peter's Prep Open House. Shuffling behind colossal seniors leading the tour, scratching at my itchy dress shirt, and raiding the snack table are all included in the day’s festivities.
Four years ago, I made the decision to attend St. Peter’s Prep, a school that is approximately 45 miles away from my house. I travel by train to school; It takes between an hour and a half to two hours to travel one way. Considering I live in a town with a quality public high school and live near two other catholic schools, many ask why I chose Prep.

Every apartment is so different from the last: whether it is a small brownstone or a new apartment in tall multi-story buildings, each place offers a unique quirk and challenge as well as a new perspective of Jersey City. I have slept next to an old pencil factory and across the river from The Financial District. On election night, I watched the Empire State Building out my window light up red or blue every time a state was called.
While it is not easy to live in a home that is not mine, I often remind myself about my decision years ago. Events such as winning an individual event at county championships, selling hot dogs at a Operation Smile fundraiser barbeque, or even just making conversation with my friends in the morning, remind me that the sacrifices I make are worth it. It often gives me a chance to step out of my comfort zone that I have benefitted greatly from.
Four years later, I am one of the suited-up seniors leading tours at the Prep Open House. At another crossroad in my life, I must choose, not the best school, but the right one. In some ways, I am just like that middle schooler
