The Corporation of National Community Service found statistically that volunteering and being involved in the local government can give a job candidate 27% higher odds of finding a job rather than someone who does not volunteer. When I finish high school my many community service achievements will help my odds of getting a job because I have met my civic responsibilities. I have met my civic responsibilities by going to school board meetings, babysitting for the parents of the Parent Teacher Organization and working the PTO Fun Run, as well as during holiday season helping Toys for Tots and Salvation Army for the last 2 years. I have learned that even the small things make a difference.

Within the first 30 minutes there is a public forum where people from the community, whether they have kids in school or not, are able to stand up and give there opinion on an issue that was being discussed or new that they would like to bring forward. Many teachers spoke about how changing away from the block schedule would impact the amount of teaching and the amount of time they would have in a shorter class period. Many opinions were heard and the one that stood out most to me was a parent with the argument that with this 8 period schedule it limits the amount of classes that are available to her child. Months after the meeting the school board revised the 8 period schedule and instead of having each teacher getting a full block of prep they are only getting a skinny period (40 minutes) and this allows another skinny period available and is offered as a class. After attending both of the meetings I learned the importance of being involved, sharing voice and views and the impact it can have especially in a small community like …show more content…
It could be anything, in every community, mine included, going to school board meetings, babysitting for the parents of the PTO and working the PTO Fun Run. The small things make just as much of an impact as the big things. Volunteering helps to give people more experience whether professional or not. I never knew how much you could learn and how I could make an impact on the issues that impact me the most. It helps bring people together and helps with understanding of community needs. I enjoyed working with the kids and knowing that they we having a positive role model. For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. The community committee’s primary goal is to create an interaction between the students, community, and the teachers to create a stronger school. The first policy that was presented and passed was the community service policy. Community service benefits not only the community but also the students by giving them a sense of responsibility. As a future educator, I feel that this policy is extremely beneficial to our students in making them not only good scholarly students but also good people. Community service would allow the students to become more involved with community around them and would allow them to interact with different environments that they normally would not.…

Dealing with civil processes at an early age will build skills for the future, allowing teens to experience what it’s like in the real world, working in close proximity to others to achieve a common goal. Regardless of how they take initiative in the community or school, they will gain valuable experience that is applicable to adult life. If you’re not terribly convinced yet, take it from the experts- according to the American Psychological Association (APA), “Community involvement is a great opportunity to show initiative and develop skills to be used in the future,” and “Being able to manage free time while balancing leisure, work and study is an important life skill. Community involvement could motivate children to get more organised and start to manage their own time.” The skills we learn by taking roles in our community build us to face the future.…
