How can Artificial Intelligence affect design/designers?
Introduction:
Artificial Intelligence (AI), defined in the oxford dictionary, as “the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.” Or simply put, it’s computers with the ability to mimic the human brain, might just be one of the biggest events that happened to mankind. And it has been gaining more attention as it finds it’s way into human’s daily lives starting from iPhone’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa the virtual assistances, to smart self-driving cars.
In 1956, the now called “Leaders of AI” John McCarthy …show more content…
But there have also been studies on the consequences of such intelligent machines such as taking over humans jobs; a study conducted in 2013 investigated ”how susceptible are jobs to computerization” and claims that within few decades 47 percent of todays jobs will be taken over by automation.
Herbert Simon once said “Machines will be capable, within twenty years, of doing any work a man can do”. Which then raises the question; if machines can do almost any work a man can do, what would humans do?
An article with the subtitle "Robots are well on their way from the pages of science fiction to your front door. In fact, advanced humanoid robots could arrive on your doorstep as early as 10 years from now.” Was published in 2008 reviewing Hanson robotics vision showing how the idea of creating humanized robots was in consideration even when there was not enough sources to back up such a …show more content…
Importance:
This research would benefit designers generally. The main role of design is solving problems in a practical advanced way and that’s why designers always need to be aware of new technologies and use them to meet customer’s preferences.
Since AI has recently been taking over our world, doing our jobs, and driving our cars (autonomous cars), designers need to start coping with it before it takes over their jobs as well. But no matter how advanced new technologies (AI) get it still can’t compete with nor substitute human’s consciousness and creativity, and this is where AI and designers can collaborate. This research targets people of all ethnicities and gender that work as designers from the start of their career to the very end of it. Previous
