Art throughout history has been a powerful instrument for people to express their emotions. It also serves an important role as to the way events are documented in history. Art is particularly powerful due to the many forms that it can be created in. There are many forms of art, which include poetry, music, books and theater. These various forms of art have the capability to capture the emotion of an event and provide the audience with the ability to understand what the artist felt at that time. When creating art the artist is trying to provide the audience with a viewpoint in which they can transport themselves in their own mind and feel the emotion of that situation as if they were there. When looking at the modern poets in the Armenian culture, it is clear that they used their poems, to express the trials and tribulations that they were experiencing. These authors were able to show how art functions in society, although they did not always use the same idea or techniques to express themselves. In The Dance written by Siamanto, he uses poetry as a form to tell a story about the massacres at Adana in 1909. Siamanto says, “Don 't be afraid. I must tell you what I saw, so people will understand the crimes men do to men” (The Dance, Siamanto). In his poem, Siamanto is able to show the audience the horrors that these people were going through and at the same time his poem works as a reminder of the terrible things people do to each other. His notion of art may have been to document these horrible events so that they are not repeated by future generations. Art still functions in a similar fashion in today’s society and in our individual lives. When people experience tough times they often rely on a piece of artwork that they can relate to. An example of this would be that some people might have a favorite song that reminds them of a loved that has passed in their life. That song may bring an array of feelings, but it can help that person cope with the situation. Art has lasted from generation to generation because people will always need a way to reflect their emotions in a creative way. In my personal life I use different forms of art everyday. Whether it is listening to a certain type of music for an emotion I’m feeling or just watching a comedy film because it makes me laugh. In my opinion, art is powerful because it can help the artist who is creating the work get through a difficult situation as well as help someone in the future who may go through a similar experience. The power of art transcends time, because people will always need a way to express themselves. Each artist may have a different notion of how art functions in society, but art is ultimately one of the greatest tools that help people who don’t even know each feel connected to one another.
