To this day, one of my closest friends of over thirty years, still receives derogatory comments of extreme frugalness and myths of fabled gold. Anti-Semitism feels the same as it did upon my first encounter; although, today those same slurs are spoken as light banter, as if it has lost the its original meaning. Coming from an entirely different culture this attitude was immediately jarring to me. I could not understand why they were targeted, but I felt …show more content…
Social justice will not be accomplished in my lifetime, but progress has to be made to insure its inevitability. Systematic oppressions have not diminished much, it has changed and we need to change as well. Education is a great place to start, but we need social justice advocates, like social workers, to push for change on the micro, mezzo and macro levels all at the same time. The scary assumption is a loss of power for the dominant and very privileged but there is no sealing or limit to growth and progress. We as a society just have no understanding of what that is so we hold steadfast to our old systems. As we grow as a species we have to evolve our understanding and sense of humanity. In closing, true equality and advanced humanity is not our hope but our

Systematic oppression or institutional discrimination can most easily be defined as “systematic mistreatment of people within a social identity group, supported and enforced by society and its institutions, solely based on the person’s membership in the social identity group itself.” These social identity groups can be either racial, separated by physical differences, or ethnic groups, separated by cultural origin and patterns. Through the functionalist perspective, the question of how does the dominant or majority race benefit from systematic oppression and institutional discrimination arises when looking into the continued oppression of African Americans in the United States by the White majority. If you are White, you are a product of the…

Defending the Oppressed Rubi Garza Texas A&M International University Defending oppression does not necessarily involve rioting like many people would think. Oppression is nothing new for the history books. Since the beginning of time there has always been a way in which people classify themselves, adding or taking away value based upon certain characteristics. No matter the time period, geographical location, or political era people find a way to rank themselves, and those around them. Take for example in the Bible; the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt by the Egyptians. The only differentiating factor between these two groups of people is where they were from.…

The importance of understanding privilege and oppression cannot be emphasized enough for those of us in the helping profession. There are so many factors to consider, especially if one plans to work with diverse populations.
