In the essay “An Argument for Animalism” by Eric T. Olson, he concludes that personal identity is psychological continuity. I will disagree with Olson’s ideas about personal identity in the brain-transplant and the thinking-animal argument. The main point of the paper is about animalism. Olson’s argument is that each one of us is numerically identical to a human animal. Olson says that a person could exist who is not numerically identical to any animal, but it’s not the case for you and I. Olson, then presents his ‘Thinking-Animal Argument’ and the alternatives to that.…

On the article “A Change of Heart about Animals”, Jeremy Rifkin argues that animals should be treated humanely because, according to science, the differences between animals and humans are less than what we think. He believes that animals should be given the rights that protect them from inhumane treatment and human consumption. He is telling us that we have to give them the same rights that a human possesses. In affirmation to Jeremy Rifkin, we should treat animals humanely because they also have a heart that can feel pain and a brain that can think.…

“Describe some research studies which have addressed the issue of whether non-human animals have a “theory of mind ', and explain what these studies have allowed psychologists to conclude in answer to the issue.” Chimpanzees are humans closest relatives and therefore are a good animal to study when attempting to assess whether non human animals have a theory of mind. This essay will attempt to first define what is meant by theory of mind, then will look at three studies and their approaches to researching theory of mind in non- human animals. It will briefly summarise, in turn, what each study attempted to achieve, how the study was conducted, and the subsequent finding of each study, specifically looking at areas of theory of mind which relate to chimps ' understanding of human problem solving and visual perception in both humans and other chimpanzees. “Theory of mind” refers to the way in which people understand other humans as thinking beings.…

Reading, writing, speaking, and various other forms of communication have been essential to the evolution of human beings. Our species’ dominance today was preconditioned by communication, allowing us to excel in fields such as abstract thought, logic, and rationality. Thousands of years have elapsed since the alphabet, one of our most essential mediums of communication, was invented. This invention altered the methods in which we structure our thoughts and ideas, thus domesticating the human species into the cooperative junction it is today. However, this was only an invention, not a natural occurrence imbedded into the human intellect.…

In an article on Columbia College Today, Herbert Terrace Studies Evolution of Language, his conclusion was that these primates were only “brilliant beggars.” They had only learned responses to things that were wanted, or were cued to sign something by their trainer just before they did it, that it was not spontaneous or conversational. He makes me feel like I’m choosing to believe with my heart rather than my brain. But after watching Koko demonstrate many of the attributes that humans do, such as communicate, feel lonely, love, mourn, demonstrate linguistic displacement, I feel that Dr. Patterson’s research may have been more successful than Dr.…

However, studies have shown that certain animals, like apes, have the capacity for theory of mind. Theory of mind is when an individual can recognize that their thoughts are their own, and what they know, others might not know (Premack & Woodruff, 1978). In the study by Premack and Woodruff, chimpanzees were presented with different situations in which a human was struggling with different things. For example, in one situation, the human was trying to get a banana that was out of their reach, in another example; the human was shivering because they were cold. The chimpanzees were given a bunch of pictures with possible solutions on them.…
