I value his opinion and his place in my life, so I subject myself to the harshness of his comments. Since I used to work for him at one time, his demand for excellence is no surprise. No matter what the subject, I take away some new knowledge from him and put an emotional Band-Aid on the rest. Almost always, I have implemented his suggestions. Right or wrong, I am always glad I did. My final comments about revision and peer-review are that as a student I know I have a lot to learn. It is most important to get feedback from trusted sources; otherwise it is difficult to see what could be better. Being able to use available tools to moderate and correct what is imperfect really is a gift. The wisdom to comply with suggestions accordingly might not be a comfortable thing, but it can help when it matters most. Nancy Sommers sets forth a criteria in her essay “Revision strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers” which all writers are classified into two types of writers, student writers and experienced writers. She gives each a set of characteristics used to classify writers. She explains that student writers always feel the need for constant revision and when they revise they mostly use methods such as deletion, substitution, addition and reordering. Conversely, experienced writers envision their readers and use a first draft as a way to figure out what their argument is what they want to say about it. She says that experienced writers seek meaning in the engagement and that she has found that is much more effective.…

I was called by my teacher today. I knew that he was impressed with my writing before and so had a relieving kind of feeling, but that all went away when I saw him. The facial expression of disappointment made itself clear. He started by telling how my paper was too good that it was impossible for this much improvement to happen. He tells me that I cheated or copied someone else’s paper.…

When I first started the rhetoric, inquiry and critical writing course I was unaware of the specific flaws in my writing assignments. During this course not only did I figure out my own style of writing, but I also learned about other writing styles and how I could incorporate them into my own writing. The constructive criticism given by my peers and professor improved my way of writing. The hardest obstacle I had to face while writing was staying on topic. I gave too much information about a general topic instead of focusing on a small portion and brainstorming from there.…

Throughout my academic career, I have taken and been successful in a large number of English classes. In high school, my writing followed an academic format, mostly writing towards a prompt. Although I was able to gain writing practice, I never received a large amount of feedback that I could use to help myself in the future. Similarly, when I started college I practiced different forms of academic writing, structured around a prompt and focused on the end goal of a good grade. However, in college I was able to start gaining useful feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of my writing that I could apply to later assignments.…

Throughout the course of the semester, my ability as a writer has increased at a slight level. The semester began on a rough patch with my initial submission of assignment one, but that was quickly resolved in my revisions. Since that point, my grades have been relatively similar. I would accredit this improvement to the feedback I received on the first assignment, although some of my faults could be seen in the next assignment as well. Since that point, however, my writing has been relatively consistent.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…
