For this week’s writing assignment, I will be conducting an After-Action Assessment on my first essay, The Push for Perseverance. I will be focusing on what worked for me, what did not work and why, and the resources I have found to help strengthen my writing skills.
A few of my assets, noted by my instructor and the rubric were: my introduction and how I was able to put the discussion on track with a bold thesis statement, strong topic sentences, the content of my paragraphs, transitional sentences and a formal conclusion. When it comes to writing a title and introduction, I try focus on one question; after reading an introduction alone, does it pique my interest to want to read more? Signal phrases are used to help lead into a quotation or statistic. A few instances within my essay, I abruptly quote someone without a transition into doing so. My instructor provided an example with how to solve the issue which was helpful because signal phrases were something I had heard of but wasn’t exactly sure of the use of them. To get a better understanding of when and how to use these, I have been looking at examples of signal phrases and essays that have them included. To see examples and how versatile signal phrases can be, I looked for the most basic explanation of what signal phrases are so that I could better understand them at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFVMfY0oi8g. At https://www.cpp.edu/~ramp/program materials/recognizing-transitions.shtml I am able to identify where signal words are being used. Paragraphs are provided with the number of signal words in parenthesis without telling exactly where they are. An answer key is provided at the bottom for me to double-check my answers.
