Some might say that it was Macbeth because he is in the one who had assassinated anyone who came in his way, but it was Lady Macbeth who had unlocked his power to start the deadly route to the throne. A quote by Thomas Otway “Ambition is a lust that is never quenched, but grows more inflamed and madder by enjoyment.” suggests that once a person a driven by ambition, the drive for it only increases as you move closer to the finish line. When the witches had given Macbeth the hint that he was going to be the king, he had consulted Lady about what he should do and they thought that killing Duncan was the only way. However, Lady was certain about the plan but Macbeth had said “ From this time Such I account thy love. Art thou afeard To be the same in thine own act and valor As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem, Letting “I dare not” wait upon “I would, ” Like the poor cat i' th adage? ” (Shakespeare,1.7.38-41) . Macbeth said this to show Lady Macbeth that if he kills an innocent person, no amount of water in the ocean would have cleaned the blood from hands. Many might say that it was because he had his mind on set on the throne but it is also because of the way Lady Macbeth had caused the change in him. She thought that Macbeth was too innocent and soft. This can be seen in “What beast was ’t, then, That made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would Be so much more the man. Nor time nor place Did then adhere, and yet you would make both.They have made themselves, and that their fitness now” (Shakespeare, 1.7.47-54). Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth that he isn't human, and when he first told her that he was okay with the murder of Duncan and now he is backing down on the plan.
